Scene 5.29 - It's A Girl
EST: INT. Mary Jane’s Bedroom - Night.
(The newlyweds lie in bed, it is quiet and the full moon lights the room pleasantly. It’s the middle of the night. MARY is quite modest about HER glorious triumphs and it is apparent in HER modestly-decorated room.)
CARMELLA
I’m pregnant.
MARY
Yes! That’s wonderful. Does Bud know?
CARMELLA
I want to tell him. I thought I would talk to you first.
MARY
Smart. I wonder if it will look like him.
CARMELLA
No. She won’t.
MARY
It’s a girl?
CARMELLA
She’s a girl.
MARY
When are you due?
CARMELLA
Eight months, twenty-seven days, plus fifteen-odd hours of intense, excruciating labor from now.
MARY
What are you going to call her?
CARMELLA
I thought you might come up with a name. After all, she’s our daughter.
MARY
(Joyous:) I’ll name her Zephira, after the Witch Of The West Wind.
CARMELLA
She will like that.
MARY
We’ll have to invite the witches to the baby shower.
CARMELLA
Yes, let’s. Uh, how involved do you want the father to be in all this?
MARY
Unless he’s willing to get married to the both of us, he shouldn't get to know at all. If he does marry us, we’ll have him jump out of the cake at the baby shower...
CARMELLA
He’s gonna know sooner or later. Whose could it be?
MARY
He’s too busy with the Empress to notice. She’s got the next sixteen pairings with him-
CARMELLA
I know. It’s her roster. We were lucky to get in when we could. The populace is quite impatient as well. There could be a revolution.
MARY
Well, the Empress granted him a royal decree last week. If he’s still got it after the baby’s born, we’ll give him all the options.
CARMELLA
I could just make him forget about us. I can do that, you know.
MARY
I like you best when you aren’t trying to impress me with all your superpowers. I like you when you are frail, and when I can protect and care for you.
(MARY holds HER.)
CARMELLA
Well, I’m bound to get a little emotional over the next few months. I hope you can forgive me if I get a little edgy.
MARY
There’s nothing to forgive. You are my wife and I accept you unconditionally.
CARMELLA
Yes, but you married me before you found out that I am really, well, a deity. The Deity. Around here, anyway...
MARY
Yeah, and I got the best of all worlds. My best friend, wife and Goddess Of The Universe all in one.
(They kiss.)
CARMELLA
I think Bud is going to hang on to his decree. He saw how well it worked for you.
MARY
I think he would find being married to us to be to his liking.
CARMELLA
If even to escape the Empress for a few days. (They laugh.) Just don’t let him get the upper hand. I let you dominate me because it’s in your nature. He’s a man, he isn’t so smart about these things. He might try to master you.
MARY
Oh, that’s impossible. There isn’t a man alive who can master me.
