Done Right:

Future SteamVR Overlay Substitute

by Pan Diman

Xiexe’s VR overlay being used with Discord.

A few weeks ago, Xiexe, mostly known in VRChat for his custom shaders, started to show off a new project on Twitter, and told us the details regarding his upcoming product, an overlay system called “XSOverlay.”

According to Xiexe, the system is going to be similar to well-known products on the VR market, such as OVRToolkit, OVRDrop, and Oculus Dash. Some of the currently supported features include SteamVR Input 2.0, custom window recentering, multiple windows, music player support, and ranged window editing.

The point of this project is to create a new overlay system “that isn't clunky, that looks nice, feels good to use, and puts user customization at the forefront.” In fact, the creator called XSOverlay so comfortable that he found using it “slightly addicting.”

At the moment, Xiexe’s overlay isn’t fully prepared to be released as a final product, however, the developer is going to publish it on Steam either in late 2019, or early 2020. “I plan to make it a paid product,” he said, “probably somewhere around the $15 range.”
