Critical Failure:

First Massive Server Issues in Months

Picture of TeemuTNC’s “VRChat adventures” posted on Twitter.

During the period of time between November 28th and December 3rd, for the first time in almost 10 months, VRChat was having some of the biggest issues with the servers due to anonymous DDoS attacks.

As always, when it comes to lags and connection problems, VRChat always tried to inform us with announcements on their Discord server. However, the reaction received from users proved that many of them never read the announcements in the first place. Eventually, it led some people to spamming in the chat, caused by their frustration, so when things started to get out of hand, they closed a few channels. “Chat was going bonkers with the network issues [complaint]. [Ruuubick] had to mute General chat,” said Elire, one of our regular Discord users.

During these issues, Tupper had to repost the same message over and over again, “As stated in #announcements, #server-status, and multiple times in this channel, we're experiencing some extended server issues,” he said. “This may cause ‘black screens’ and the spinning VRChat logo to appear and hang before showing an error message while attempting to connect to VRChat or join a new instance.“

Right now, it seems that the issues are finally gone, and VRChat is working as intended for the most part. However, it appears that the company is being attacked, as they mentioned the reason of these problems in a Medium post, “Upon investigation, we learned that these disconnects were due to DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks against one of our network technology partners, specifically targeting VRChat. We began building a solution immediately. On November 30th, we were able to begin attack mitigation with those partners. This required several days to adapt and take effect.”

As Tupper said, if you require support for VRChat for issues other than networking or connectivity problems, feel free to visit #vrchat-support on their Discord server and follow the instructions.
