“New Avatar, Who Dis”:

Cloning, Chairs, and Optimization

by Pan Diman

Important announcement from the VRChat team.

New update brought a bunch of basic features, such as avatar chairs, cloning, world playlists, new polygon limit, and, of course, optimization stats for avatars, which became the most controversial one so far.

As far as we know, people got offended by the system because their avatars got marked as “Poor”, even though they were considered as optimized, but it also became an additional problem for creators and commissioners on the “VRC Traders” Discord server. Many think that the system was published as a result of a rushed work due to holidays and the fact that open beta was available for only several hours before the live update.

Another thing some people didn’t like about the update was the ability to clone avatars. Apparently, VRChat developers have finally accepted that avatar theft is one of the things they will never be able to prevent completely, so they came up with a new solution and made it an actual feature.

Some users who complained about cloning mention the system isn’t ready for it just yet, as it appears that there are only two privacy options on avatars, “Public” and “Private”, and it’s not going to be good enough until players gain more options that would allow them to share avatars with their friends only.

However, a lot of users are also glad about the new feature. For example, such groups of intellectuals as “Solid Legion” consider it a great opportunity to produce massive content in public worlds as fast as possible.

“If people make the avatars public for people to use, I don't see much reason for them not to want it to be cloned (unless if it's a reward or an avatar only for some specific people),” said Bornato, one of the leaders of the Snakes. “So I don't really mind, I actually found it a great feature to be introduced together with the chairs. Yesterday I had some fun I didn't have for quite a while in the game.”

In conclusion, we can assume that new features got released before the holidays to provide underage users with new tools for the second coming of Ugandan Knuckles during the winter break.
