AI Learns to Become an Alcoholic and Dies

In December of 2021, a mysterious “artificial intelligence” account named Nota AI became one of the latest local legends in virtual pubs, reportedly used by a bot learning from other users.

Despite the lack of solid proof that the bot is the result of a real machine learning project, it didn’t stop Nota from growing in popularity. According to users who met Nota, the VRChat community taught the bot how to react to head pats, give or receive hugs, walk and take directions, pour drinks, and, apparently, “become an alcoholic.”

“The developer has confirmed that Nota uses a Quest 2 strapped to a robot and [isn’t] emulated by applications,” said GJH111 on Reddit. Eventually, several sources also mentioned that Nota may be moving to a different platform.

A few weeks ago, the account’s bio said that Nota was gone from VRChat forever, making the account “dead” to the platform, however, users mentioned that they saw the bot recently. Perhaps, Nota needed a break, since with the wrong people it might be only a matter of time till the bot becomes either a mirror dweller or a nazi.
