Easy Tomato Pasta Sauce

1/2 cup olive oil

1 cup onions, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 cans (798 ml) San Marzano tomatoes, with juices

4 basil leaves

salt and freshly ground pepper

1/2 tsp sugar

Heat oil in a pot over medium-low heat.  Add onions and garlic. Cook slowly for about 10 minutes until very soft.  Add tomatoes and their juices. Raise heat, bring to a boil, add basil and sugar and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes until sauce is thickened. Remove from heat and using a hand blender, puree in pot.  Serve over pasta.
