Original Day Family cookbook
Ingredients:
24 common crackers
3 quarts milk
1 cup raisins
1 cup sugar
4 eggs, beaten
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon butter
Directions:
Crush common crackers. Combine with milk, raisins, sugar, eggs and salt in buttered 4-quart ironstone or glass baking dish. Dot with butter. Place in preheated 350o oven. Reduce to 325o after l hour. Bake a total of about 3 hours, stirring often, until it turns a golden rown. Do not stir during last 45 mins to allow crust to form. Serve warm, with hard and soft sauces.
Hard Sauce:
¼ pound butter
1 pound confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream butter; gradually add sugar and milk. Add vanilla. Spoon into serving dish and chill until hard.
Soft Sauce:
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoon flour
2 cups water
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix flour thoroughly with sugar; add water and butter. Bring tot a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 10 min, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
