Voices,
Walking through the Club Fair my freshman year felt like a whirlwind. Club leaders lined every table of the cafeteria, lobbying the newcomers. The boisterous atmosphere overwhelmed me, and I probably signed up for 15 clubs. Quickly, I realized that I had too much on my plate. Writing this now, I am so grateful that halfway through that year I decided to stick with Voices. From challenging myself to interview new people to spending entire weekends editing articles and formatting layout, every moment spent towards this paper has been so rewarding. With every meeting, interview, article, issue, and year I’m constantly reminded of the incredible opportunity this paper gives to uplift the voices of our student body
As I reflect on my time at Voices, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for all of the creative, collaborative, and thoughtful people with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working. I want to thank Mariacristina, my co-editor-in-chief, for her passion for this paper, which has always energized me; your adept editing, clever brainstorming, and clear communication constantly wows me. Thank you to Leonard and Rainer, our section editors, for providing thoughtful feedback to our writers and for always giving me a good laugh at our Tuesday night editor meetings. Thank you to Ciaran for revitalizing the video team and providing our audience with engaging and witty content. A huge thank you to Ms. Conklin for her unwavering support as our sponsor; my appreciation for your commitment to the paper at every stage – brainstorming, writing, editing, layout, distribution – cannot be understated. Thank you to Mr. Gilken and Principal Laurie for always being flexible and accommodating with our unreasonably fast turnaround times.
And of course, our paper runs off of the dedication of our reporters. Thank you for your diligence throughout the year to highlight the voices of our diverse school community; I’m blown away by the number of new reporters we welcomed this year and the level of engagement you all brought to each meeting and article. Finally, a huge thank you to our readers – whether you only read your Horoscope or read every article in each issue, you are the motivation for our staff; I hope our publication has helped you stay informed, given you a good laugh, and challenged you on a tricky crossword clue.
Kimathi, Annabelle, Rowan, and Maha, I am confident that Voices is in the hands of a resilient, passionate, and determined staff. I can’t wait to see how you continue to improve this paper.
Thanks for all the late nights and incredible memories,
Jocelyn
