Mastering the Game: Inside Masterman’s Boys’ Volleyball Program

Ciaran Yudiono (10-4)

Girls volleyball started off this year with a bang, with the team winning nearly every game in the fall.  With the boys’ season beginning, players are confident that it will also be a good year for the boys’ team.

The new crop of students, none of whom attended Masterman for middle school, all play club volleyball outside of school. There are also many returning players from last year that have greatly improved and honed their skills throughout the offseason. Two times a week, the teams practice either before school starts or after it ends, having games on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. Great leadership and excellent coaching has also helped the team greatly in their running season of success.

This season, two seniors, a junior, and two freshmen have joined the boys’ team. “I am really inspired by the wave of new freshmen coming in to revitalize a program to its prior glory,” says team member Samuel Hamilton (11-2). Among the new players is senior Franklin Banaj (12-3), a rising star on the team. Along with many returning players, everyone has high expectations for the season, with many players having joined club teams in preparation for the season.

With that said, the team has a lot of work ahead of them. Team captain Oliver Joseph (12-1) says that he is “Excited to work hard and have fun for the duration of the season” with it being his final year playing before graduating to the University of Pennsylvania. He and the rest of the team look forward to the season and have high hopes for making it to the finals this year.
