As the new school year began, Mrs. Neu announced Masterman’s musical of the year, Beauty and the Beast, sparking excitement between returning actors, student viewers, musical fans, and Disney enthusiasts. With merely two months to capture the magical essence of the singing and dancing tea cups, beasts, and princesses, production began.
Cast members have repeated their lines and choreographies to songs such as “Be Our Guest” countless times. The stage crew has shone lights and mastered the art behind the scenes. And our treasured orchestra is guaranteed to fill the auditorium with joyous harmony. With students working overtime, even giving up off-days, to immerse themselves in the well-known and beloved musical, the promisingly captivating show is set to open its curtains starting Thursday, February 29th.
Maeve McNichol 24’, starring as Belle, has sat down with Voices to tell us more about Masterman’s take on Beauty and the Beast and what we can expect.
Tell us about how production started and the casting.
We started right back from winter break with rehearsals most mornings and after school. I’m Belle and I love the characters and her songs. The music is my favorite part of the show. I feel that the casting is wonderful. As we go and add new songs and scenes, they fit everyone more and more. Aanand is Beast and his voice is perfect for it. The cast has captured the comedy of the production. It's incredible, we have formed a great little community.
Describe Belle’s character, what aspects of yourself are you adding to the role?
Belle’s a little different from all the other Disney princesses. She’s supposed to be odd so I can play her a little bit weird and be more temperamental. I love showing the different sides of her. She’s also super smart so she captivates the feminine energy of being intelligent but also considered beautiful. I feel very kindred to her, she’s one little side of my personality. I’m playing her as much of a classic Disney princess as I can by, for example, changing my voice a little bit to fit her. Naturally though, the chemistry I have with the other actors comes out a little bit in the role. If I’m making a face in a scene, it's probably a face I would make in real life as a reaction to something.
Are there any downsides to the role?
There’s not a ton of depth to the original depth. It's kinda hard when the main character is sort of just a plot point for everything else to occur so you can’t drift off from the main focus a lot. Regardless, it's still super rewarding to watch her unfold with the rest of the play.
What’s your favorite thing about the character?
She’s incredibly brave and I think her ability to change her mind and perspective is very impressive. She doesn’t allow judgment to take root in her and ground all of her decisions.
And lastly, compare Beauty and the Beast to other Masterman musicals.
There’s something in the air that is elevated this year. Everyone is more excited than we’ve ever been. With the casting being so correct, so many good team bonding moments, so many good songs, everyone fulfilling their position, the set design being incredible, it’s surely going to be a magical show.
