Ms. Jones: The Last Serve
Scarlett Vecsi ('28) and Iris Matkowski ('28)
Many students may know Ms. Jones who teaches Physical Education and the Men’s and Women’s Varsity Volleyball Coach. She joined the Masterman staff in the 2018-2019 school year and has been a cherished teacher for 8 years. She originally taught at Albany Charter High School for around 8 years, Reading High School for 2 years, Palumbo High School for 6 months, and finally at J.R. Masterman Middle and High School.
Some students may have heard the rumors that Ms. Jones was leaving or having a baby etc. Both are true. Ms. Jones recently had a baby named Giovanni Jones who is currently 5 weeks old. Sadly, on October 18th, she left Masterman for a placement in the Spring-Ford School District with a similar position teaching Physical Education and Health. She transferred to be closer to her children and home; she is a single mom and wants to be there for her children every day. She gains three and a half hours daily with them by accepting the Spring-Ford position.
As Masterman celebrates the birth of her son many students are saddened by her leaving us; however, in the end, it is better for her and her family. Deveena Derick (‘25) has a message for Ms. Jones:
I could go to her for absolutely anything, even annoy her multiple times a day and she would listen…for me it all started with her when I came sophomore year for volleyball tryouts. She's been a part of my life ever since, and is a person I look forward to seeing every day when I come to school…She's always had so much faith in me and encouraged me to keep pushing and improving even though I started at square one...I will miss her so much, and I hope that she can continue to shine bright and inspire others like myself. I love you, Jones.
Aanand Shah (‘25) wants Ms. Jones to know, “She is my mom away from home.” Ms. Jones has impacted many students' lives at Masterman, many students love her and will miss her.
On a happier note, her son Gio is healthy and doing great. Ms. Jones has told us he loves to snuggle up as if he was still in the womb and he loves his sister Kamyrn. Kamryn, Ms. Jones’ daughter, is the only person who can keep him awake and make him smile. She is a great big sister to her little brother Gio! Recently, Ms. Vecsi and Mr. O’Neill were asked to be the godparents of baby Gio, which they happily accepted. Ms. Jones will always be connected to Masterman through the students and staff.
Ms. Jones would like to share her last message with all the students she had the pleasure of teaching and coaching throughout the years. “I have truly been blessed to have had such an amazing experience here at Masterman. My heart breaks at the thought of having to leave my students, players, and friends. Masterman will always hold a special place in my heart. Love, your favorite teacher, the snarkiest one.”
