Every February, Masterman kicks off its Annual Can Drive, a month-long event where students, teachers, and staff come together to support the local community. Organized by the Student Government Association (SGA), the drive benefits Feast of Justice, a Philadelphia nonprofit that provides food and essential items to families in need.
The connection between Masterman and Feast of Justice is a personal one. Patricia Neil, the organization’s executive director, is married to former AP English teacher Dr. David Neil and has been a leader in the Students Run Philly Style program. “This is just a way for us to give back to the community,” said Kaddy Ren, president of SGA. “We usually ask them if there are specific items they need, like canned food, soup, or hygiene products, and we focus on collecting those.”
Over the years, the Can Drive has expanded to address more needs. Last year, SGA partnered with the Feminist Club to collect menstrual products for the entire school district. This year, they’re teaming up with the Red Cross to split donations between organizations, ensuring an even bigger impact.
The drive also includes a fun competitive element. Every morning, SGA volunteers collect donations at the metal detectors, recording each item and assigning points based on its value. “Certain items, like hygiene products, are worth more points because they’re more expensive and needed more,” Kaddy explained. These points contribute to the Blue and White teams’ Spirit Week totals.
At the end of February, the team with the most points earns a 150-point bonus going into Spirit Week, which adds extra excitement. “In previous years, people have gotten really into it and brought a bunch of stuff on the last day,” said Kaddy.
Masterman’s Annual Can Drive is more than just a tradition—it’s a way for students to make a real difference while having fun. “Whether it’s one can or a big donation, every bit helps,” Kaddy said. Events like this show how the Masterman community comes together to support those in need.
