Why did you decide to go to college outside of the country?

There were a bunch of different reasons I decided to go to school outside of the country, but the main deciding factor was the school itself, not just the idea of going abroad. I’m planning on majoring in International Relations and the specific school that I’m going to -- Instituto de Empresa or IE University -- has a really good program for that. Also because the school itself is super diverse/international, I knew that going there would give me the opportunity to see a wide variety of viewpoints and opinions, which I knew I’d really appreciate. There was also definitely a price factor. Even though I’m going to go as an international student, tuition is going to be cheaper for me than it would be at some in-state universities. I can’t deny that the location played a big part in it. It’s just going to be really cool to go to school in Spain!

How has Covid-19 impacted your college plans?

Obviously as of right now there’s a lot of stuff still up in the air, but my plans at this point in time remain pretty much unchanged. I actually have sort of higher hopes that school will be able to be in person in Spain than in the States, because Spain is further along than we are. It is a little stressful that I have to book an apartment now, since there’s a little bit of a concern surrounding the possibility that I might book a flat and then be unable to move come August. Honestly, my biggest concern right now is getting a visa, because regardless of whether school is online or in person I’m hoping to move in August and I obviously can’t do that if I can’t get a visa. So pray for me lol.

What is your favorite Spanish phrase/saying?

I really like the phrase “no hay que ahogarse en un vaso de agua”. Literally, it means “there’s no need to drown yourself in a glass of water!” and it’s most similar to the English phrase about making mountains out of molehills. I just think it’s a surprisingly useful phrase and it is just one of those phrases that I think calls to mind EXACTLY what it’s talking about.

Do you plan on continuing music/the viola after high school?

I’m hoping to! Unfortunately, IE doesn’t have an orchestra, but I’ll be looking for community orchestras or a way to join a string quartet. but regardless of whether i can continue ensemble work i’ll be practicing solo repertoire. Also over quarantine I've been teaching myself guitar, so hopefully I can keep that going :)

What is your favorite Masterman memory?

Once we were at city view and Abe got up to go so I jokingly said dasvidaniya — or dos vidaniya, whichever romanization u prefer — and he turned around, dead serious, and yelled “you KNOW I don’t speak Spanish.”. King of knowing the difference between Spanish and Russian.

What is your favorite cheesy joke?

What did the fish say when it ran into the wall? Dam.
