Fall Dance

Sylvia Erdely (11-4)

Dances are one of the most highly anticipated events of our high school careers. A year would not be complete without the music, dancing, and accompanying shenanigans that deem the annual stresses of school worthwhile for an evening. After a year devoid of in-person school events, the Fall Dance was well awaited. Faced with new planning challenges, Masterman’s Student Government Association (SGA) worked hard to put together a successful dance that complied with Covid regulations. After a weather setback that postponed the dance from October 29, the Fall Dance took place on the Masterman patio on November 10.

Planning the event was considerably more complicated this year than in the past. Freshman and SGA representative Marisa Maisano (9-3) notes the differences and challenges of planning an outdoor event: “The dance is normally in the gym [where] weather isn’t a problem, but because of Covid we had to move to the patio. Originally we didn’t have a rain plan and thought we were going to have to cancel when there was rain on the 29th, but luckily we were able to move to the tenth.” Aside from the date change, “everything did go according to plan,” adds Maya Salzman (11-1).

The night of the dance, students flooded the Masterman patio, booming with pop music and humming with friendly chatter. In Havana Covington (10-4)’s opinion, “the music was perfect. It was energetic and got people excited.” Maya speculates that “students were enthusiastic about going to the dance, especially seniors and freshmen. The seniors really brought the energy to the dance.” All in all, “the atmosphere of the dance was so much fun,” summarizes Marisa.

The evening featured performances from the Pep Squad and student band Rain Delay, which were “such [positives] of the night. I think everyone was really excited when [the band] played,” says Maya, “everyone was dancing and having a great time.”

Overall, the Fall Dance was a hit. Being the first in-person dance since the pandemic and freshmen and sophomores’ first high school dance, the event exceeded many students’ expectations: “It was my first high school dance, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had an awesome time,” Marisa recalls. Havana shared a similar experience, stating, “the fall dance was different from other school events. The last time I remember going to the school dance was in middle school and it was in the gym. This fall dance beats any other school dance that I’ve been to. It was so much fun and really enjoyable. I would definitely go to another dance in the future.”
