Matthew McGeary loves pancaking guys on the field, but he’s also a big fan of watching the stars and learning from documentaries. “A nerd with a jock body.” That is how sixth grade Masterman teacher Mrs. McGeary defines her son, who is a football commit to Colgate University. With the absence of football culture at Masterman, Mrs. McGeary more than makes up for it by watching her son block against the top defensive recruits in the country.

Matthew is currently a senior at St. Joseph’s Prep, which is ranked 19th in the country for football, where he plays Left Guard on their highly revered football team. In addition to displaying his tremendous talent, he shares the field with the likes of Jeremiah Trotter Jr., a Clemson commit, and son of Philadelphia Eagles legend Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Sr.; and Marvin Harrison Jr., son of Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison Sr.

Even as a kindergartener, Matthew immediately embraced the competitive culture of football, and he always played in older leagues. Throughout his younger years, he built muscle and strength through swimming and football, and secured a spot in a Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Football league, he discovered his true passion: “[Football] gave him that outlet where you could push people and get away with it,” Mrs. McGeary described. Matthew spent the past four years with the same team at St. Joe’s, where he has created special bonds with the coaches, who have served as his mentors.

However, the success of Matthew and his team comes with large time commitments for Mrs. McGeary. The family has traveled for hours out of state to support Matthew, including a road trip to Atlanta last year. Humbly, Mrs. McGeary played down her sacrifices: “We just do it, that’s how we do it.” It’s clear that her support, paired with Matthew’s prowess on the field, has led to tremendous opportunities for Matthew.

Following tireless summer days and strenuous winter lift sessions, collegiate scouts took notice in Matthew’s strong play on the field. His dedication and hard work translated to scholarship offers from five Division 1 Schools: Sacred Heart, Colgate, Robert Morris, Bryant, and Duquesne. After speaking to the coaches and getting a feel for each college, Matthew decided to commit to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Speaking on his decision, Mrs. McGeary added: “He’s a country boy at heart, he wants to be in the country.”

That country boy is still pioneering running gaps and keeping his quarterback clean for the number one state-ranked team at St. Joseph’s Prep as they continue on with their fantastic season. And he’ll have his family’s support all the way.
