Sports Review: Spring 2022

Hope Applegate (10-2) & Ayush Bennur (10-2)

Badminton: Badminton is a sport played using rackets to hit a birdie back and forth across a net. It is usually played in two forms: singles and doubles. To find out more about the Masterman team, we interviewed badminton player Joyce Chen (10-2). “We have games once or twice a week. We also have practice once or twice a week.” When asked her favorite part of being on the team, Joyce responded, “Although my team didn’t get a preseason, I think the Masterman badminton team has a good sense of community where the upperclassmen and underclassmen work well together and form good relationships.”

Baseball: Masterman’s baseball team has had a great season this year, currently 8-0. “We have a bunch of well-skilled athletes. We are currently undefeated. We have great team chemistry and great success.” stated baseball player Ahsaan Mangum (10-3). “I feel like baseball is a team-centered sport in a sense that one person can do well but there are also eight other players with you, so knowing you have a group contributing helps. There is no ‘I’ in ‘team.’”

Tennis: Masterman's Boys’ Tennis Team has seen great success this season with a record of 9-2. “We have a really good team with a core of skilled players helping us along,” said player Ayush Bennur (10-2). The team has advanced to the PPL finals and will be playing a championship game against Central on Tuesday (5/10). Additionally, singles players Ajay Sheth and Kevin McHale competed in the District Singles, with Ajay Sheth winning first place and the chance to compete in Hershey and Kevin McHale third place.

Lacrosse: The Masterman Boys Lacrosse team made up of boys from Masterman, Carver, and SLA has had a great first season. With a record of 7-4, the team went into the playoffs and even beat Central. The Masterman Girls Lacrosse team made up of girls from SLA, Palumbo, and Masterman had a great season too. With a record of 7-5, they advanced to the playoffs but lost to Central.
