Students in Mr. Tannen’s Calculus AB class reported that he has been out of class for a week. In his place, an artificial intelligence system has taken over. This comes as the school district has introduced an ambitious new pilot program to increase efficiency and cut costs. Principal Laurie seized the opportunity to help the district gather data about the introduction of artificial intelligence into the teaching sphere. He noted, “This program has allowed Masterman to improve productivity. The system caters to students’ needs and grades assignments right away.” Faith Njiru (‘25), a student in the Calc class, noted, “I get my grade as soon as I submit my assignments. In all my other classes it takes weeks to get my classwork, homework, and test results back.” Other students added that they receive in-depth, personalized feedback. “With Mr. Tannen, I would constantly have to pretend that his lame calculus memes were funny. Now with the new AI teacher, we have more time to learn in class,” Faith added.
In only a week, test scores in the class have increased by 45%. If the program is successful, Dr. Watlington plans to implement a district wide shift to artificial intelligence teaching systems. Mr. Tannen commented, “I think this is a great opportunity for our students.” While AI took over his classroom, he’s taken time to develop his basketball skills on the roof.
Dr. Watlington shared in a meeting with parents that he is optimistic about the program. He noted, “I’m pleased with the program. If we are able to replace all teachers with artificial intelligence by next school year, we will design a plan to replace students next."
