In February, NHS celebrated its first-ever Black History Month Spirit Week.  This entailed students dressing in various ways to show their support and recognize the importance of black lives.

One person who put in great effort to put together this spirit week was NHS art teacher Ms. Saquora Lowe-McLaurin.

Lowe-McLaurin said that participating students had an incredible time dressing up to show their support and hopes to see another BHM Spirit Week in the future.

“It's basically a time where fellow classmates can show their enthusiasm and support for the accomplishments made by African- Americans all around the globe,” said Lowe-McLaurin.

However, she did have some concerns about the overall participation.

“Overall, participation has not been that great.  Next time I think it will be better if we do more promoting of it beforehand.  However, students that did participate did seem to have a really good time with it,” she said.

Even though there was minimal student participation, Lowe-McLaurin said to anticipate Black History Month Spirit Week returning next year.

“ I would definitely like there to be another one. I think it's important for students to be a part of or at least get the opportunity to be a part of,” said Lowe-McLaurin

Despite Spirit Week being somewhat overlooked by many students, teachers at NHS want to bring it back due to the fact it is an important message and shows NHS support and recognition of black lives.

Even though student engagement was minimal, it is widely believed among Norwood High staff that celebrating a spirit week in recognition of Black History Month is not only important, but a good way to bring Norwood High students together over a good cause.

“For next time, I would definitely like to see more people around the school engaging in the spirit week.  Even though there were a lot of people who didn’t participate, we have high hopes for next time. If we tell students and teachers earlier to prepare for it, there will probably be more engagement in it.  Even with all of this said, the students and teachers who did participate I think had fun with it, and I'm sure more people will next time,”  said Lowe-McLaurin.

Lowe-McLaurin has made it clear that Black History Month Spirit Week is something that means a lot to her, as well as the many staff who put in efforts to plan the event.

Because of this, another BHM spirit week is definite.  Show your participation by being prepared to celebrate in February 2025!
