Minor subjects have been a fairly new addition to the NHS course selection. Minor classes have been expanded this year at NHS and many students and teachers have been appreciative of the flexibility they offer.

Students get to choose from a variety of subjects to take as a minor class, such as Introduction to Podcasting, Accounting, American Song, Creative Writing and Playbuilding, Journalism, Introduction to Art, Introduction to Tech, and more.

Many students enjoy having so many choices to pick from and they say that results in them being more engaged.

Sophomore Patrick O’Brien said, “Minor subjects are extremely beneficial to students because they allow a student to explore an alternative class option.  Students also enjoy minors because they get a choice in what they are.  This also leads to the students being more engaged in those classes because it is a class they enjoy.”

He believes that the addition of minors has transformed student schedules.

“The introduction of minor subjects has changed NHS by leading to a more diverse selection of classes that students can choose from. It also has created some very interesting minor courses that you can take at NHS. My thoughts on minor subjects are that they are very beneficial and they are usually interesting classes."

Teachers like Ms. Schnatterly have also expressed their enthusiasm for minor subjects.

“Minor subjects provide opportunities for more of our student body to explore elective courses that might not have normally fit into their schedule had they been major subjects.  And students might be able to explore more than one minor subject at a time -- broadening their experience even further,” she said

She also believes that the expansion of minor subjects has remodeled student schedules.

“Minor subjects can provide the opportunity for adding additional sections of the minor subject, therefore enabling more students to be able to take the minor class.”

Students and teachers think that minor subjects are extremely beneficial and important at NHS and have a positive impact on the learning curriculum.

They give students a chance to explore other interests they may have as well as give them the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge of the subject. When students actually have an interest in the subject they’re learning, it leads to further engagement and participation, creating a more productive learning environment.
