Whether it's Saturday or Sunday, Norwood High has found a new way to make sure students always have a chance to serve their community.

Last year, US I history teacher and student council adviser,  Ms. Kate Curtin organized the first-ever “ Service Saturday.” Service Saturday was a chance to make sure that students who can't always get their own community service opportunities find one.

On Sunday, November 3 students worked on showing their appreciation to Veterans Day in remembrance of those who have served. Students worked on making goodie bags, thank you cards and made a huge poster to present the Veterans with. The poster said “ Thank you for your service” according to Rose Donovan.

Students such as freshman, Sathvika Kommera say that their favorite part of this program is “helping the community and doing stuff for the community” and says “it is the best way to help the school and community.” Senior Laura Danehy says that she thinks Service Saturdays are great because “a lot more kids are volunteering and are getting involved in the community.”

Service Saturdays/Sundays occur once a month, throughout the whole school year and any student can sign up to participate. Service Saturdays in the past have included food drives, environmental clean-up days and “Christmas in the City” helper for the day in which students helped serve food to homeless children and give them presents.

Students such as senior Laura Danehy who have participated Service Saturdays in the past said that the best part of Service Saturday is that “it makes it super easy to get service hours...and if you are looking to do service hours it's already set up for you and is a great way to give back to the community.” Junior Rose Donovan says every time she goes “it's always a fun time.”

Service Saturdays are not only a place for students to come together and serve the community and gain hours but it's also a great way to spend time with fellow classmates as Rose Donovan states, since Service “Saturdays” are offered both days of the weekend.
