Gay-Straight Alliance Welcoming New Members

By Shylah Hansen, Staff Writer

NHS’s Gay-Straight Alliance is currently seeking new members to reactivate its standing as a supportive club for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.

The GSA is a student-initiated club and is sponsored by adjustment counselor Ms. Tartufo. The GSA usually takes place on Wednesdays, from 2:30 to 3:30, in the guidance area’s conference room and runs all year long. The day of when the club takes place has been moved around with the absence of participants.

Ms. Tartufo explained that the “gay-straight alliance club was created about 13 years ago” and that there used to be many members, but unfortunately “the enrollment is less and less.” The GSA is a nationally known club, available at most public high schools in the United States.

Tartufo expressed that she “worked with some of the students that thought Norwood High needed a GSA for support” and that she has high hopes for students to start joining. Students can attend at any time. “Anyone is welcome at any time,” Tartufo adds.

The club usually reads news articles and watches videos to help understand discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and how to help prevent it from happening and discuss what students can do to respect members of the community.

Tartufo expressed that “students who have participated in the past have said it’s been a positive experience to them” and that if a student has a question about the club, they can find her in the guidance office and through email.
