Valentine’s Day brings out many emotions for those in a relationship and those who the holiday does not involve.

Flowers, chocolates, and heart-shaped letters - what’s not to be liked about Valentine’s day? Many people celebrate this day of love, while others see it as too commercialized and unnecessary.

Some people who have a special someone to celebrate this day with often enjoy appreciating them by going out to eat, giving them cards, or keeping it simple and just spending the day with them. Art teacher Mrs. Mead McGrory is one of them.

“This day is sort of anticlimactic because I like celebrating the day before since my birthday is February 13th, the day before Valentine's day. I am happily married and my husband and I usually don’t do very much. We’ve never been big on the holiday, but I do know some people that like to donate money to their spouse’s favorite causes. Now I would say it is definitely much more enjoyable now that I have a Valentine, rather than when I was younger and wondered what I was going to do or who I was going to spend it with,” she said.

However, some students think it is overemphasized and should not be as big of a deal as people make it out to be.

“I personally do not like Valentine's Day because I think it's too advertised. It’s weird to me that we have to have one specific day to celebrate our loved ones. I think it's weird how much profit is made off of our love for each other. It’s never really been my favorite holiday, but I still make cards for my mom and dad because I know it makes them happy,” said freshman Lily Swederskas.

Although this day is about love, it can also be a day to remember happy memories spent with friends.

“My senior year, my best friend and I decided to be each other's Valentine since we did not have one at the time. We went to dinner and saw a movie in the theater and had such a fun time. Now I remember it as the perfect friend's Valentine's day,” said Mrs. Mead McGrory.

Others enjoy this day but are not in love with the idea of going all out to celebrate.

“I like this day because I like the decorations, the chocolates, and the fun energy that everyone has.  It can definitely make people feel lonely especially those who the holiday does not pertain to. Some years hang out with my friends, while other years I spend this day with the people I love. I have nothing bad to say about this holiday, but it is definitely over-hyped,” said sophomore Jess Saber.
