Career Week: Give Me Five

By Payton Otto, Staff Writer

This year’s 2019 career week, run by Career Counselor Mrs. Jean-Noel, is being held from Tuesday, Nov. 12 until Thursday, Nov. 14 in the GSU. The purpose is to get all students to explore different career choices and to get students prepared for college, their career, and life readiness.  This year's career week theme is “Give Me Five.”

Mrs. Jean-Noel, a career counselor at NHS says the purpose of career week is, “To prepare students for college, career and life readiness.” Career week, as Mrs. Jean-Noel describes it, prepares students for college, what they want to choose for a career and overall life readiness.

There are different workshops each day. On Tuesday, Nov. 12 there was a Ted Talk that was a motivational video that was shown in homeroom to everyone. On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Katie Sullivan from Education First will present a workshop titled, “Could a gap year be a  part of your post-secondary plan?” Mrs. Jean-Noel describes a gap year as, “a semester or year of experiential learning, typically taken after high school and prior to career or post-secondary education, in order to deepen one’s practical, professional and personal awareness.”

The last workshop will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14. Dr. Galligan will be teaching a workshop which is titled, “The Great Equalizer: Time” “Dr. Galligan will share some thoughts and strategies about time management, and help students reflect on how managing your time can improve your ability to think critically and solve problems.” Mrs. Jean-Noel explained.

Career Week is going on all this week, except for Friday, Nov. 15. Students should go check it out and maybe one of the workshops will influence you to try out a new job or make you want to study that profession in college.

Mrs. Jean-Noel encourages students to participate in this year’s Career Week. It could open your eyes to new opportunities.
