After a long anticipated wait, “Outer Banks" season 3 was released in full on Feb. 23, 2023. “Outer Banks” is an action-adventure teen drama streaming on Netflix. The show is written by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. The new season of the show contains 10 episodes just like the previous 2 seasons, varying from 45 to 79 minutes long.

“Outer Banks” arrived at Netflix in April 2020, during quarantine. For many viewers stuck at home with nothing to do, the show was extremely entertaining and binge-worthy. The show takes place in Outer Banks, North Carolina on Kildare Island.

The island has been separated into two social classes who despise each other in every way for many decades. The poor Pogues live on the south side of the island known as “The Cut” and the rich, privileged Kooks live on the north side of the island known as “Figure 8”.

During the first two seasons, Pogue John B Routledge and his friends search for lost treasure which is related to his father’s disappearance while simultaneously on the run from their Kook enemies Ward and Rafe Cameron, played by Charles Esten and Drew Starkey, who are on their trail and will do anything to get the treasure first.

In the first season, they are on the hunt to find $400,000,000 worth of gold from a shipwreck and the golden cross of Santo Domingo in the second.

In season 3, John B played by actor Chase Stokes and his friends Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss), Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline), JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), Cleo (Carlacia Grant), and Kiara Carreira (Madison Bailey) who is lovingly nicknamed “Kie” embark on yet another adventure to discover the ruins of El Dorado, the lost city of gold.

Alongside an unexpected guest, the Pogues start their search for the mythical city and try to steer clear of a new antagonist, Carlos Singh, a rich Caribbean man with connections everywhere who is desperately searching for El Dorado too and thinks the key to its discovery is John B and his gang.

Unfortunately, the season did not live up to the hype and critical acclaim that had been building up before its release.

The season dragged on and at times was uneventful due to multiple plotlines going on at the same time. If you happened to miss one key detail, the show would be extremely difficult to grasp and complicated.

I even found myself having a hard time paying attention and constantly scrolling through my phone during certain scenes.

Some characters even seemed out of character compared to previous seasons.

For instance, JJ was referred to a handful of times as “Jayj” throughout the season despite never being called this beforehand, which felt forced.

Finally, relationships were strained or ruined to add drama to a plotline that already had too much going on.

Sarah, protagonist John B’s girlfriend, is thrown back with her ex-boyfriend, Kook Topper Thornton (Austin North) after a fight with John B. This plotline has been recycled many times and is starting to get old.

However, its fair share of flaws, the season has many redeeming qualities that made it an enjoyable watch.

Many of the scenes included in the new season are extremely funny, such as a moment in one episode where JJ gets in a scuttle with a crab who pinches his foot.

The writers also definitely listened to the fans and their ideas for where the show could go during the making of this season as fan-favorite couples, JJ and Kie and Cleo and Pope finally have their happily ever after.

Heartthrob and villain Rafe has also been set up for a potential romance next season when he meets Sofia, played by Fiona Palomo.

But nothing could compare to the thrill of watching the main characters discover the treasure and solve the mystery yet again.

The Pogues who have had all of their treasures stripped from them by the Camerons finally get their victory, something that felt extremely rewarding for the audience.

“Outer Banks” has been renewed for a fourth season. To top their El Dorado mission, a man approaches to ask for their help in searching for Blackbeard’s boat. Many fans, such as myself, are anxiously awaiting John B’s next great adventure.

Despite the highs and lows of the season, I thoroughly enjoyed watching. I laughed, I cried, and overall, it was a good action-packed, and fun addition to the franchise.

I would’ve liked it more if it had been more cohesive and less predictable. But if you love drama and of course, adventure, this season is definitely worth a watch.
