At first, it sounds like something out of a lazy high school student’s dream, but this reality is a lot closer than most people think. Esports is a rapidly growing initiative that aims to bring video games into the world of sports.

Esports are surprisingly structured like regular sports. There is an esports league and within it, there are teams from all over the world that compete in different games for large sums of cash. These teams are just as hard to get on as a real sport.

Also just like a real sport, some high schools are beginning to have esport teams of their own. According to the District of Columbia state athletic association, “Currently, there are more than 200 colleges and universities offering almost 15 million dollars in scholarships.”

I feel as if watching pros play video games is pretty interesting considering that many of the games they play are fast-paced and they are some of the fastest at these games.

Dylan Burgess, a senior at NHS, says: “Esports are amazing because they are just as, if not more exciting, than an actual sport.”

Esports might not require the same physical abilities as the average sport because esports is more focused on mental abilities. Competitive players play against each other in a large variety of video games for millions of dollars.

Personally, I believe that esports would be a great addition to NHS, It gives less athletic kids a chance to join a team and do what they love.

As someone who plays video games and who saw the 2018 Eleague majors live I can personally say that there is a huge difference between normal people’s skills and the skills of the competitive players. Not just anyone can sit down and play like competitive players, and they really worked to get those skills.
