Friday, February 3rd, the girls' varsity basketball team played in the annual helping hands game. This year they took on Ashland coming out with the win, 58-40.

The bookkeeper of the game, Tyler Goncalves, had some positive things to say about how the girls played. “The team played excellent team defense tonight.”

By the end of the first quarter, Norwood was up by two. The first half they played aggressively and held Ashland to 15 points at half time totaling only three team fouls. Junior, Alexa Coras, was dominating on the layups securing 15 points so far, and junior, Tricia Waldkowski put up two three-pointers.

In the 3rd quarter our Mustangs only senior, Caroline Forrest went into the game for the first time and had her first basket of the game. Coach McDonnell called a timeout with three minutes and 25 seconds to go in the third. The Mustangs were up by 13 going into the final quarter with a score of 45-32.

Another timeout was called with two minutes and 21 seconds to go in the 4th. The Mustangs secured the win with the final score 58-40 moving to 11-5 on the season.

The team's defense only allowed 40 points this game.

“I think the game went really good, they were a good team. It was a good team win” said Alexa Coras.

She continued to put up layups all game and she totaled 28 points which is her highest-scoring game so far this season.

“I think I did good tonight, I felt strong and confident. My team helped me out,” said Coras.

The Helping Hands game is very important to the team for what they are doing for families in Norwood. T-shirts and raffle prizes were being sold at the game to raise money for the fundraiser.

“Helping hands means a lot to me because we're supporting families in Norwood that are in need so it's good to give back to them,” said Alexa Coras.

Norwood will be taking on Westwood and Newton South for their last two games of the season so be sure to come see some good basketball.
