According to Ms. Mead McGrory, The Memory Project consists of “high school students in America making artwork for students in struggling areas of the world.”

Art teachers across the United States are provided with pictures of children from developing countries for the service project. Their students create portraits based on these photographs, and then send the artwork across the world as a sign of friendship. Teachers of the young children put together a heartfelt video to express their sincere gratitude for the portraits.

Katelyn Flynne, a dedicated Artstangs member since sophomore year, says that “The Memory Project is one of the most rewarding things [she’s] done through the art program in Norwood,” and loves the connections it has helped her form with people she’s never met.

Before ornaments can be sold to raise money for this service project, there are various steps that need to be completed. The first step is to roll out slabs of clay and use cookie cutters to create a variety of shapes. Then, the ornaments must be fired in a kiln before they are ready for decorating. The final and most enjoyable step is to glaze, or paint, the ornaments with bright colors.

Ornaments will be sold during lunch beginning the week of December 13th, so make sure to support Norwood High’s talented artists by purchasing a beautiful holiday decoration!
