A new style of art challenges creatives to imagine a future where environmental sustainability and efficient technology can coexist in society, and leaders from Norwood’s Morrill Memorial Library are making school wide efforts to spread the word.

According to Vice News, Solarpunk, a growing genre, draws from both Steampunk and Cyberpunk aesthetics that focus on nostalgia for the industrial revolution and advances in technology; ‟But unlike these dystopian and mechanical universes, Solarpunk is a more optimistic, regenerative vision of the future.”

Norwood High's Environment Youth Club is partnering with Together Yes and Progress Norwood to create a digital scrapbook with writing pieces and works of art from citizens townwide.

Sathvika Kommera, senior member of Norwood High’s Environmental Youth Club (EYC) provided some insight into the events and her strong feelings about the anticipated impact on the Norwood Community.

‟Solarpunk to me shows a way to captivate young minds to create a project that would inspire others to help the environmental crisis at hand” Kommera comments, referring to rising levels of global warming, pollution, and harmful waste disposal.

‟EYC’s role in these events are to help Together Yes, Progress Norwood, and partner with other clubs in school to help raise awareness of the project and have people use their creative minds to create pieces of art that shows the post-environmental crisis,” she said.

Kommera, an environmentalist herself, hopes that this project will create lasting effects on students to advocate for sustainability.

‟As a team we hope to bring more awareness of this environmental crisis, and bring a greater body of students that will be willing to fight for this change,” she said.
