The guidance department here at NHS consists of counselors, whose main responsibility is to ensure underclassmen can have a good high school experience.

Underclassmen tend to think that guidance doesn't have anything to offer them yet the Guidance department offers many opportunities for a better experience in high school, including emotional support, course selection, personal guidance, and academic assistance.

Ms. Erin Regan serves as the head of the Guidance department and provided insight into how and what the guidance department can do for underclassmen.

She gave us a basic understanding of why you should go to guidance especially if you're just starting your high school career.

“Ninth and tenth grade are very important to build that foundation of planning what to do after high school if that might be college. So, helping pick classes out, helping with study skills, and if classes aren’t going well, we can help figure out what they need,” she said.

Your guidance counselor can even help with issues unrelated to academics.

“Also, if it’s something that’s even outside of school like sports, community service volunteering or even trying to get a job”, she said.

Guidance counselors are even able to provide you with assistance that is more personal and less academic.

“We are also able to provide emotional advice and support where we talk them [students] through the issue and help them find a way to resolve it. Especially when it comes to ninth graders where we provide more assistance and guide them through more difficult situations but when it comes to older students we push them to do more work,” she said.
