Professional sports continuing despite Covid-19

The world of professional sports have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and have to follow many precautions in order to be able to play. The NBA, NFL and MLB all have to follow certain rules such as having no fans in the stands,  and having players getting tested everyday

According to ESPN, the NBA created a bubble of 22 teams. They played 8 regular season games, and whoever had the best records would make the playoffs and the teams that had the worst records would go home. 16 teams in total would go to the playoffs. There were no real fans in attendance until the second round of the playoffs.

Norwood High School junior, Rohan Sedhay commented on the success the NBA had in pulling off a healthy season. “The bubble idea started on August 17 and ended October 11 and had 0 Covid cases total between those months so it was a successful idea, and all the players had good and healthy conditions..." he said

The MLB had push their season back a little bit. The MLB decided that they will let fans know if they can attend the games. They are also trying to play as many games as possible.

NHS Junior Bryce Kanser  had this to say about the MLB playing right now: "I think this is a good situation because the players and organization are still being careful. Also, it gives us fans a reason to stay home to watch the game and enjoy it.”

Lastly, the NFL is planning to play a full season and are 6 games in so far. The good news is that the Covid cases have been low. It's up to the team whether or not fans are allowed in the stadium.

The New England Patriots are not allowing fans to attend games in Foxboro and not everyone agrees with that decision.

Norwood History teacher Mr. Sarianides said that “ I thought that was goofy; it looked dumb. A  lot of people have tried to compare that it's like comparing apples and oranges with the amount of players, the set up is different, and the organization is different. I would like to see fans in New England. If others can, why cant we?”

“I think they have to play despite the fact that we are in this pandemic but the league has been careful with handling the virus. They just have to continue to be careful so the league doesn't shut down” he said.
