In honor of this year's Earth Week, the Environmental Youth Coalition decided to celebrate the Earth by continuing their annual Paint a Pot and Plant a Seed event.

Tuesday, April 24, members of EYC and all students at NHS were invited to meet in the courtyard during WIN where they were able to enjoy the sunny weather and learn how to be more sustainable at home.

EYC advisor Allison Leichtman mentioned how this activity is an awesome way for kids to participate in celebrating the Earth and all that it gives us.

“We are painting pots and planting seeds as part of EYC’s Earth Week 2023. We thought it would be fun for kids to get outside and be one with nature. We also liked the idea that kids could plant a seed to take home so that they could learn to be more sustainable,” said Leichtman.

This event is also a nice welcome to spring and hopefully, it makes people realize it's easy to plant and grow seeds at home which is a great way to be more sustainable.

Members of EYC had been planning this event since the end of February and have been putting lots of effort into making sure it would be a hit among the students.

“There has been work behind the senses in order to make this event successful. We’ve been having little meetings for the past few weeks to plan this and get ideas on how we can celebrate and include everyone in our Earth Week activities. I think this has been a success. We love promoting sustainability. We just wanna show people how to love the earth and appreciate the little things it gives us,” said sophomore Julia D’Annunzio.

Freshmen Sylvia Caparrotta, a member of EYC has also been looking forward to this event along with Julia D’Annunzio.

“We’ve been planning this I think since the end of February. I definitely was looking forward to this and was preparing a lot,” Caparrotta said.

Along with painting a pot and planting a seed around the courtyard, there was a fun scavenger hunt for people to participate in.

“We also have a scavenger hunt out here and it's Earth Week-related stuff like trivia,” said freshman Anika Mabano.

For those who have not heard of or been involved in Earth Week EYC hosted a very welcoming activity that could allow for those to check it out and see what being involved in the environment is all about.

“I've never really celebrated earth week or been a very active participant but me and a few friends saw that this event was taking place during WIN and thought it would be cool to participate and see what the club is about,” said sophomore Julia Zanotelli.

This is the third time EYC has hosted an event like this. This opportunity is held almost every year and definitely welcomes new members to get a feel of what this club is all about.

Sophomore Jeily Maldonado Yanes even got inspired to be more involved in the upcoming months.

“I think this was a great way to be a part of Earth Week and when I heard of this it made me want to check it out and maybe even join EYC next year.”
