NHS is home to many talented students, including artists. From drawing and painting to directing plays, there is a wide variety of artistic opportunities and pathways offered in our school.

Freshman Samantha Sullivan is 15 years old and alongside being a student-athlete, is a self-taught artist. Throughout her life, she has always had a passion for the arts and for creating.

During 2020, being quarantined at home allowed for many opportunities for artists to improve their techniques and style and promoted a surge of creativity across the globe.

Sullivan describes when she started to make art seriously and how her art has evolved over the years.

“I’ve kind of always done it and over the years I’ve gotten more into it and it’s gotten way better. I remember when I was little I used to draw lines for hair so it’s definitely progressed from stick figures to people,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan’s primary focus is on traditional art, which involves clay or paper and pencil but she also derives inspiration from people who work with other mediums.

Sullivan shares, “I get inspiration from a lot of digital artists and also looking at both the 1950’s style of art and pop art,”.

Specifically, Sam’s art is also influenced by her family.

“My sister is a professional artist and so is my brother-in-law. My dad’s hobby is also to birdwatch so he paints a lot of birds,” voices Sullivan.

Many artists share their love and grievances online about certain parts of their creation process.

For instance, some artists love to color in their art but despise lining their pencil work with Sharpie or fine liner.

My favorite thing to draw is faces because drawing eyes is fun but my least favorite thing to draw are legs because they look weird,” confides Sam.

Sam Sullivan plays both volleyball and lacrosse for NHS outside of school and also loves to read, among other activities in her spare time so being able to find the time for drawing and creating isn’t always easy.

“I don’t always have the time to draw outside of school but mostly when I’m drawing, it’s during class on my school notes because I’m bored,” she says.

Drawing is something that takes time and effort to improve. It isn’t an easy hobby to pick up but it can be extremely fulfilling.

For beginner artists, Sullivan provides some advice for your creative journey.

Being an artist doesn’t mean that you’re automatically good, it means that you haven’t given up yet,”.
