The Spread of Abortion Bans

On September 15, Indiana’s state legislature passed the first abortion ban since the overturning of Roe v. Wade this summer. Combined with the bans in or near neighboring states such as Kentucky, Missouri, and West Virginia, this section of the United States is in support of the ban. As a result, any people who may need the procedure will have to travel to multiple states in order to receive an abortion.

According to an Axios article, “Where abortion has been banned now that Roe v. Wade is overturned” by Oriana Gonzalez Jacob Knutson, “state lawmakers have already cracked down on abortion medications and may seek to prosecute women who cross state lines to get an abortion.”

This is a nationwide problem that is happening in other states such as Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas,  and Utah.

In Massachusetts, the laws have a completely different take on abortion. According to the website Mass.Gov, Massachusetts allows abortion if the mother is under six months pregnant and in life-threatening conditions.

All this said, it is still unclear what choices may be made in states across the country.
