No More Snow Days?

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the 2020 school year for all students by the use of remote and hybrid learning. In past school years when a snow day occurred students anticipated the call from school that allowed them to stay home. This year ends this pattern. Students have to attend remote school. On Thursday, December 17, students at NHS had their first snow day in school.

John Nabbout, a junior at Norwood High School does not think that students should attend school online on snow days. “Teachers should give us work but not have us attend classes because it would be more productive and students are able to catch up on missing work.”

On Friday, Dec. 18, warnings about grades and work completion were handed out in regard to helping students acknowledge their missing work.

John continued to say that “with warnings handed out the next day, teachers should just assign some work and let students complete everything else on their own.”

English teacher Mr. Manuli understands and appreciates that with the technology everyone is able to have when it comes to online learning but would rather have a snow day off to relieve the stress of staring at a computer. By the end of the day, he felt fatigued and many of his students did as well.

“I remember asking how you guys were doing; it had been a long day especially with the snow coming down, it seems like the rest of the world is shut down and enjoying the rest of the day while we are focused on the screen.”

If Mr. Manuli had the option to make the decision, “I would prefer to do assigned work so students can do what they need to do and take care of themselves… they don't have to sit in the same spot all day.”

Marikate Kenny, a junior,  also agrees that the snow day should have been taken off because students do deserve a break from school. “I would have liked it better if we had the day off just because I feel like some kids need a break from staring at the screen all day. It gives me headaches and I’m sure gives other people headaches.”

Although having school off would have been preferred she does also believe “that it's better in the long run like we will have to like make up a day at the end of the year, hopefully.”
