Have you ever wished to join a club where you feel welcomed and also have fun? If so, you should join a brand new club that has only been running for 2 years which is the Asian Cultural Club!

The club's main focus is to foster an Asian descent awareness because Asian culture isn’t seen enough around the area and the school. History teacher and club adviser Laura John feels that more schools should recognize Asian culture because it isn't really appreciated.

“The club members are all trying to foster Asian descent awareness because there are groups of students with Asian descent that want to share their culture but can’t find many opportunities to do so,” said John.

The advisor of the club, Laura John, was chosen to start an Asian Cultural Club by several students.

Laura John was chosen because they knew she would run the club very well.

“Several of my freshman students wanted an Asian Cultural Club and have asked me to be the main advisor of the club,” said John.

The Asian Cultural Club has the students 100% involved. This club is a student-led club with much teamwork. The students brainstorm all of the ideas for the club and are responsible for the planning of the events for Norwood High School.

“Well I just came up with the most accurate logistics but the students plan all the events and are responsible for mainly the whole club” said John.

The club has been experiencing a lack of active students coming to meetings. Even though there are more than 40 members, not all of them are participating. The club is searching for active members.

“The number of students in the club varies but less than double digits of students are active. So we would greatly [like to] have more active members,” said John.

There are many future plans for the Asian Cultural Club that are being planned as this article is being written

The club is planning more school-wide events and they are planning to associate with the Norwood Library and the Norwood High School library after winter break to discuss people of  Japanese descent being treated badly in the 1940 camps.

“After winter break we are planning to meet with the Norwood High School Library and the Norwood library about Japanese-American men who were discriminated against in the 1940 camps during World War 2,” said John.

The students have been very productive in the club and have been trying to push a book event. That’s just one of them but they also decorate and work with fabrics, wrapping papers, and other artistic mediums.

“We have been currently working with fabric, paper, wrapping paper, maps, and etc. Also we have been writing explanatory cards,” said Anika Nina Isabelle Mabano.

All in all, you should join the Asian Cultural Club and you’ll have a good time with nice students and a thoughtful teacher.

You’d get to work while being in a welcoming environment where everyone works together as a team.
