“The Summer of Broken Rules” by K.L Walther is a young-adult romance novel perfect for fans of Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series. The book follows 18-year-old protagonist Meredith Fox after the recent loss of her sister and best friend Claire as she embarks on a week-long family vacation to Martha’s Vineyard for a cousin’s wedding.

The family wedding forces her to confront her grief and participate in wedding festivities, teaming up with a groomsman nicknamed Wit.

In my opinion, this book was a perfect summer read and I really loved all of the pop culture references that were sprinkled throughout.

The author pays tribute to Taylor Swift multiple times and Meredith’s favorite song, “Hey Stephen” by Taylor Swift which she dedicates to Wit, who is actually named Stephen was such a cute, romantic addition to the book.

I have an extreme soft spot for “meet-cutes” in romance books, where the two love interests have a love at first sight and adorable first meeting and although Wit and Meredith don’t exactly have a meet-cute, their meet-ugly was one of my favorite things about the book.

At the beginning of the book, as Meredith arrives at Martha's Vineyard, she jumps out of her family’s jeep and accidentally kicks a groomsman in the face, who turns out to be Wit.

Despite this terrible first meeting, Meredith and Wit still team up and get closer throughout the wedding games, one of the most notable being Assassin.

While the romance was one of my favorite aspects of the book, I also loved how the author delved into Meredith’s healing process.

Meredith at first is hesitant in participating in the wedding festivities because it feels too soon after Claire’s passing, she decides to play in her memory and attempts to win Claire’s favorite game, assassin which I thought was bittersweet and endearing.

Throughout the book, Meredith is forced to come to terms that she doesn’t have to put her life on hold as Claire wouldn’t want that for her and realize that happiness can be found right there with her family in her favorite place.

This book was a great and quick read. I was able to read it in one sitting on the same day I bought it. I absolutely love summer-focused romance books and this book was just that.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good rom-com that isn’t solely centered around romance.
