Many students in high school have part-time jobs, which gives them a reliable source of income for the time being. While it may be challenging to keep up with work and school for many students, there are many positive benefits of having a part-time job.

Now with labor shortages, there are plenty of opportunities for students to make money with part-time jobs.

“Part-time jobs allow students to get first-hand experience of what it's like to enter the workforce, be responsible for certain tasks, and commit over time to an employment opportunity,” said NHS career counselor Mrs. Jean Noel.

Sophomore Jerry Frey works as a waiter at Conrad’s, a restaurant in Norwood Center, and had many good things to say about it.

“Yes, it really never gets boring because there are always people there,” Jerry said.

He also said he would definitely recommend his job to other people and it is overall a very positive work environment.

Similarly, Sophomore Damien Lin works at the Boston Tavern, a restaurant on Route 1 in Norwood. He works as a waiter.

“I love my job because of the people I work with. I feel that since working here I’ve developed a good relationship with each of my coworkers. We even hang out after work sometimes. Working with people you like is really a game-changer,” Damien said.

Next, Sophomore Dan Michienzi works at the TakeAway, a seafood restaurant in Norwood.

“I like what I do there, I like my coworkers, and my bosses are very generous and kind”, said Dan.

Dan also believes that his job is special.

“I’d say what makes my job special is the people I work with. I work with a lot of my closest friends, and I’m now friends with people I didn’t even know a matter of months ago,” he said.

“I’d recommend this job to someone who is friendly, hard-working, and respectful. The establishment itself and the staff is small so chances are you’ll be doing a lot of everything, and in a small space”, he said.

Unlike Jerry, Damien, and Dan, sophomore Joey Manning’s job is a bit different. Instead of working for a business, he works for himself by mowing lawns.

“I like my job because I get to choose when I work and I can make my own prices and work at my own pace,” Joey said.

He went on to say how great this kind of job is for people who play sports or have busy schedules.

“I would recommend my job to other people because at this age a lot of people have busy schedules, including myself…I can play sports year-round while having time to work because I can choose my hours.  I also only work in the summer so that I don't have to quit my job halfway through the year,” he said

Despite this, Joey also explains how this job may not be for everyone.

“Some people are not cut out for this manual labor, so make sure that you are fully committed if you do happen to decide to start mowing lawns,” he said.
