Abstract
Observation of the future representations of adolescents reveals a contradiction: what they see as their free choice leads to the development of clusters of sociologically similar individuals. How can it be explined that apparent individual freedom leads to distributions far different from those which would result from chance?
One hypothesis could account for this paradox: future projections are linked to socially organized occurrences experienced by adolescentes. The latter are generally free to choose, but choose within socially learned patterns and, in a way, create a representation of the problem of their future orientation.
One concept appears sufficient to consider this link between the personal experiences of individuals and their cognitive schemes: social habitus. Its application in the field of future representations leads to the finding that the visiono f occupations is not independent of attitudes emerging in other areas. There is thus a similarity between schemes underlying cultural choices and those involved in representations of occupations. Culturally distinctive stances and the most discriminant judgements regarding occupations go hand in hand.
When considering the future projections of adolescents, the influence upon them of the organization of the school system must also be taken into account. Pupils make choices based upon judgement categories built in the educational system which they attend. Academic criteria are fundamental. This role of the school situation in future projections is seen in: (1) the particular visions of occupations of «young underachievers»; (2) variations between the visions of occupations between pupils in different streams of a given school system; (3) differences in occupational aims of pupils in similar positions, but in systems organized differently.
These findings raise questions regarding relatively neglected aspects such as that of inventiveness regarding new occupations.

A observação das representações de futuro dos adolescentes revela uma contradição: o que lhe parece ser a sua livre escolha leva ao desenvolvimento de agrupamentos de indivíduos sociologicamente semelhantes. Como se pode explicar que a aparente liberdade individual conduz a distribuições muito diferentes das que resultariam do acaso?
Uma hipótese pode responder por este paradoxo: as projecções no futuro estão ligadas a ocorrências socialmente organizadas vividas pelos adolescentes. Estes são geralmente livres de escolher, mas escolhem dentro de padrões socialmente aprendidos e criam uma representação do problema da sua futura orientação.
Um conceito parece adequado para considerar esta ligação entre as experiências pessoais dos indivíduos e os seus esquemas cognitivos: o habitus social. A sua aplicação no campo das representações de futuro conduz a verificar que a visão das profissões não é independente das atitudes emergindo noutras áreas. Há assim uma semelhança entre esquemas subjacentes às escolhas culturais e os envolvidos nas representações das profissões. As condutas culturalmente distintas e os juízos mais discriminantes sobre as profissões andam a par.
Quando se consideram as projecções de futuro dos adolescentes, é necessário atender à influência da organização do sistema escolar. Os alunos fazem as suas escolhas baseados em categorias de juízos construídos no sistema educativo que frequentam. Os critérios escolares são fundamentais. Este papel da situação escolar nas projecções de futuro aparece: (1) nas visões especiais das profissões que têm os jovens em dificuldades; (2) nas comparações das visões de profissões entre alunos de diferentes vias de formação no mesmo sistema escolar; (3) nas diferenças em objectivos profissionais de alunos que se encontram em posições semelhantes, mas em sistemas organizados de maneira diferente.
Estes resultados levantam questões sobre aspectos relativamente pouco estudados como o de ser inventivo quanto a novas profissões.
