According to the complaint, Michael Manis contacted 911 on Saturday, August 12, and reported that he had just arrived home and discovered his wife dead "and possibly beaten." The document states that he also said "there might have been a burglary" at his house. The defendant was described as "retired" in a news statement by the BCPO. Investigators think the woman was murdered the day before her fictitious widower husband called 911.

According to a probable cause affidavit that is attached to the complaint, the defendant would subsequently tell detectives that he used "a pillow to suffocate his wife" until "she went limp and unconscious" after telling the tale of the fictitious robbery and after being informed of his Miranda rights.The affidavit states that after the occurrence, the defendant devised many scenarios in an effort to hide the crime before settling on staging a home invasion during which he ransacked the room.

According to the complaint, Michael Manis admittedly concealed some of his wife's jewels in the basement ceiling of the house. Judith Manis' other belongings were tossed into a dumpster at a nearby apartment building in the tiniest Wood-Ridge neighborhood. According to the lawsuit, the concealed objects were found after the Hamilton Avenue property was searched with a warrant. On Sunday, Michael Manis was put under custody.
