In North Carolina, a 19-year-old woman has been accused of murdering her mother and stealing her 2-year-old sibling.In the Monday incident at an apartment in Hillsborough, outside Durham, Jaydah Westmoreland was charged with first-degree murder of her mother, Delila Nicole Westmoreland, 41, and kidnapping the infant, according to police.

She was detained at the Orange County Jail without posting bond, and her court date is set for August 28. She might receive the death penalty or life in prison if she is found guilty of the murder charge.The public defense for Westmoreland didn't respond right away to a Wednesday email from Law&Crime requesting comment.

During a welfare check on Monday night, police discovered the victim, who had been shot several times. The 2-year-old victim's child was missing. Although no one was present at the time, police later discovered that shots had been fired into an adjacent flat, according to officials.

The woman was reportedly found on the floor in her room by a male caller who identified himself as the victim's child and dialed 911. According to the News&Observer, the victim's son told 911 that he didn't know what had happened, that no one could administer CPR, and that he had not mentioned that his mother had been shot.

When an investigator arrived at the residence, they found "a pack of 22 rounds in a pocketbook here, and it's missing quite a few (rounds)," the newspaper stated, citing police radio communications from Hillsborough.

Authorities reported that police discovered the suspect and the toddler at a home in nearby Durham.The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Durham County Sheriff's Office assisted in the arrest of Jaydah Westmoreland after the kid was given to family members.
