A drunk mother who tragically drove her girlfriend over while driving under the influence has been sentenced to five years in prison. In this week's verdict, the Supreme Court in Broome, Western Australia, found Tamara Louise Lorimer guilty of manslaughter. She hit her partner Doreen-Joan Lindsay in November 2021 while she was backing out of the driveway of the couple's Cable Beach residence.

Lorimer, along with three other people, allegedly got in the car after receiving a call to go aid a friend at Broome Magistrates Court. However, Ms. Lindsay stepped into the path of the automobile as the driver reversed out of the driveway. The 35-year-old victim had fatal injuries, yet the ambulance and police that responded to the site were unable to save him. Later, she passed away at Broome Hospital.

Doreen-Joan Lindsay and Tamara Louise Lorimer Investigation

The pair had been binge drinking at their house prior to the horrific event. According to the ABC, prosecutor Michael Cvetkoski said the state would argue that Lorimer was criminally negligent since when police arrived, she "appeared affected by alcohol." Despite being aware that her partner was intoxicated, the lesbian mother reversed "at speed" without checking to see if it was clear.

According to Mr. Cvetkoski, hospital testing showed that Lorimer had a blood alcohol content of about 0.121 percent. However, the defence attorney, Seamus Rafferty, claimed she was not criminally at fault, claiming the driveway's peculiar design created a blind zone. The court heard that no amount of diligence would have permitted Lorimer to see her girlfriend going behind the automobile.

A young, well-liked woman also lost her boyfriend, and a loving, highly respected young woman lost her life, Mr. Rafferty told the court. The incident, according to Chief Justice Peter Quinlan, was a "wasteful tragedy," and there were "no winners" in this case. Chief Justice Quinlan remarked, "It only takes a second to take another person's life."

Any judicial ruling would be insufficient to value a person's life. Lorimer was given a five-year prison term, and on June 23, 2026, he will be able to apply for parole. Both sides' families and friends attended court to hear the decision.
