Shaylynn Curtis Incident Detail

In that it leads to a conviction and permits the defendant to maintain their innocence while admitting that the state has enough evidence to convict them at trial, an Alford guilty plea is practically similar to a guilty plea. According to a report by Princeton, Kentucky-based radio news station WPKY, Curtis told the court, "I love my son," when given the chance to speak about her on her own behalf. According to the authorities, Curtis' son passed away on the night of October 25, 2021.

Curtis was detained the day after her son passed away as a result of an event in which she transported her dead infant to a friend's house, according to Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 1. She then went back to her house on East Adams Mill Road in Trigg County, wrapped the baby in a blanket, and put him in the attic.

Police claim that Curtis made no attempt to dial 911 or request police or medical assistance for her son. The baby's welfare check was requested by Curtis' pals after they became concerned for the child's safety and made a police call. The child's body was discovered in the attic when the police came, and they estimated that she had been deceased for around 24 hours.

Late in December of last year, the cause and manner of death report was received by state police, who then gave the findings to a grand jury in January. According to the medical examiner's report, acute methamphetamine toxicity was the baby's cause of death. However, because the coroner was unable to determine how the infant consumed the methamphetamine, the manner of death was recorded as "undetermined" during Monday's hearing, Commonwealth attorney Carrie Ovey-Wiggins said in audio clips released by WPKY.

According to Ovey-Wiggins, "that is the justification for the alternative theories alleged in the indictment." "The grand jury charged that murder was a 'intentional' or 'rampant' act. Any other actions would have been wanton and would have also been considered murder if the jury did not think that the defendant purposefully fed the youngster methamphetamine to kill him.

After Curtis used meth, breastfeeding the infant could have been another way the youngster took the drug, according to Ovey-Wiggins. State law mandates that Curtis serve at least 85% of her sentence because she admitted to a serious offence, which means she will be behind bars for at least 19.5 years.
