On Thursday, August 17, Joseph Whaley, a marine from Columbia, Tennessee, perished while participating in a nighttime training exercise at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California. Whaley was taking part in a live-fire training exercise at the School of Infantry-West, which is situated on the California facility. Whaley had graduated from Columbia Central High School in 2022.

Blake Inlow told WSMV. While the specifics of Whaley's demise are still being looked upon, Maj Joshua J Pena confirmed the tragic event.

To learn more about the circumstances surrounding the marine's passing, an investigation has been opened. "An investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing, and the command is fully cooperating with the investigation efforts," Pena wrote in an email to KTLA.

He continued, "[School of Infantry - West] is supporting the family and friends of the departed through this trying time. Off the shore of San Clemente Island in July 2020, a training exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle went horribly wrong. Eight marines and one sailor died when the vehicle carrying 16 people sank in 385 feet of water. While seven troops were saved, later underwater search activities led to the discovery of the bodies of eight marines and a sailor.
