According to the newspaper, another investigator testified on Tuesday regarding the quick search of the flat following Roberts' arrest. According to her owner, Annie, a dog trained to detect the smell of blood, decomposing tissue, and bones, raced to a kitchen mop before alerting. Annie then stopped and sat down at the foot of the couple's bed after running down the corridor. Then Annie entered the bathroom and informed her handler about a strange object close to the bathtub.

After that, investigators discovered what they described as potential blood stains on the restroom ceiling and door. Buckner's body was discovered, but Annie's head, hands, and feet were missing. Annie also stuck her head in the washing machine, although she did not cry out, according to her handler. According to authorities, the suspect was apprehended after DNA proved the woman's identification and connected him to the disposal of her remains.

"Joseph's DNA was on the tape that wrapped her body, which meant he was aware she was dead, he was aware she had been dismembered, and he took an active role in wrapping her body, concealing it in plastic garbage bags," according to the affidavit of probable cause. There was no proof of a killing, according to Roberts' attorney Anne Beles, during the hearing.

The defense attorney reportedly stated, "Nothing was shown to the court that this person died by foul play, as macabre as it may be." "There is no proof in court that this person committed a crime before they died. The assassin of this woman is at large every day. The deputy district attorney for Alameda County, Teresa C. Ortega, contested that assertion.

The prosecutor claimed that a black bag that had the defendant's DNA visibly attached to it was wrapped around the body. It is obvious that it was not a suicide. Beles also claimed that APD Detective Robert Hansen had a bias towards her client and singled out her client as the murderer of Buckner over other potential candidates because of his gender. She inquired hypothetically, "Would a woman be charged?" before responding herself in front of the judge. "Not at all likely."Roberts and Buckner met at the Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco.

Buckner is a young mother and spoken word artist. A turbulent romance subsequently developed between the law school classmates. The woman's family's home was reportedly broken into and abused by Buckner and Roberts in 2022.Imani was "a beautiful and radiant light to anyone who got to know and be around her," according to her mother in a GoFundMe set up to honor her memory. As a national cause célèbre for the administration of former President Donald Trump in its efforts to portray the #MeToo movement as a witch hunt against innocent men, Roberts gained notoriety during his time in law school.

Jackson, a former member of the U.S. Navy, was portrayed by media sites like ABC News as a guy who had been wrongly accused of sexual harassment in 2018, right around the time that Christine Blasey Ford's claim of an attempted rape briefly put the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on hold.

The very day the initial claim was made, the school suspended me without conducting an investigation, according to Roberts' opinion piece for USA Today. Only a few weeks remained till my graduation, if I had attended. Jackson served as a model case for Betsy DeVos, the then-secretary of education, who later repealed Title IX protections for accused sexual assault victims.

At George Mason University in September 2017, DeVos informed the audience, "This young guy was suspended in a campus-wide email that deemed him a "threat to the college community." He was prohibited from entering campus when he attempted to find out the cause of his suspension. Due process was denied to this young man.

After five years of recovery, he relapsed and made an attempt on his life because he was hopeless and depressed.Roberts' popularity among Republicans increased to the point where he was chosen to serve on the county central committee of the San Francisco Republican Party. In a candidate questionnaire from March 2020, the defendant listed "supporting the local police department" as one of his main goals.  Roberts declared, "I am a candidate for law and order.
