Shots fired on Market Street on Friday afternoon culminated a chain of events that began with a report of gunfire on Dixie Avenue in Wilmington on Thursday afternoon. Ben David, the district attorney for Wilmington, stated at a news conference on Friday that all four incidents—three in Wilmington and one at Wrightsville Beach—are thought to be the result of one person.

He added that there was no reason to assume anyone in the neighborhood was in danger because the suspect, William Brent Gilmore, had been shot and killed by law enforcement after the conference. Donny Williams, the police chief of Wilmington, provided information on the violent episodes that started on Thursday.

According to Williams, officers were able to locate the suspect near the 2800 block of Market Street after identifying the suspect's vehicle. He claimed that the suspect had switched vehicles at that point. At Wrightsville Beach, a situation was developing at the same time. The event that occurred Friday night close to Scotch Bonnet Lane's terminus was described in detail by Chief David Squires of the Wrightsville Beach Police Department. An unoccupied home's door needed to be opened for a pest control worker to enter, according to Squires, and a cleaning woman was sent on the errand with her children and another youngster.

Squires claimed that when she arrived, she discovered a black SUV in the driveway with the door open. Without giving it any thought, the woman approached the man, who then requested assistance from her in retrieving a key he had left. He became angry when she tried to assist him, the chief claimed, pushing her into a room at the back of the house where he tied her up and abused her.

Squires claimed that when the kids went to check on her and unlocked the door, that's when a "run for their lives" started. While the perpetrator opened fire and left in a black SUV without license plates, the wife and children fled the house and were helped by beachgoers onto the sand.

Police received a description of the SUV from a local. In response, deputies from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Wilmington Police Department tried to stop the car. They tried a pit maneuver after that failed, according to Williams. During the pursuit, one police cruiser wound up in a retention pond. Gilmore escaped as officers attempted the pit maneuver and started shooting at police. He was killed when the police shot back.

According to David, the Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office have asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the event because deputies from both departments fired their firearms. Only 35-year-old Gilmore was killed in the shooting. As of Friday afternoon, the 54-year-old woman who was shot on Thursday night was still in the hospital.
