jessica Bortle Incident Detail

This information is contained in a probable cause affidavit. Police were informed by the medical examiner that Jasmine, the victim, had been hospitalised on July 8 with a "closed head injury of suspicious origins." Five days later, however, the kid inexplicably passed away in her hospital bed from "massive injuries similar to those found on traffic crash victims."

Jasmine had two broken ribs, according to an autopsy conducted by the medical examiner, and her liver had been "ripped open due to blunt force trauma." According to the affidavit, "[the doctor] described the liver as obliterated and that the trauma caused [Jasmine] to die within minutes of receiving the injury," according to police.

Only Jasmine's mother, Bortle, and her grandmother, Rose Mathis, were with her at the time of the accident, keeping her confined to the bed in her hospital room. Just before medical workers realised her daughter was unresponsive, surveillance video in the hospital hallway showed Bortle leaving her daughter's room and "shaking and flexing her hand as if in pain."

According to police, Bortle "lied" to investigators at first by saying she had no idea what might have caused her daughter's injuries before later confessing to hitting the child with a hospital table during an outburst. "Bortle told me that Jasmine started cursing at her in the hospital room because she was upset about colour crayons. Because Jasmine was swearing and the door to the room was opened, Bortle became irate with her, according to the affidavit.

"Bortle leaned onto the hospital table with Jasmine and slammed it into her abdomen." Bortle claimed she leaned towards the table even after her daughter complained of pain and "acknowledged the responsibility for causing the injury that killed Jasmine." Similar details were provided by the victim's grandmother, who told detectives that "s— hit the fan" just prior to the tragedy.

According to the grandma, Bortles first brought the hospital table to Jasmine so she could colour, but the youngster soon started "cussing" and "throwing and breaking crayons," which prompted Bortle's violent outburst. In the end, investigators found that Bortle had leaned so heavily on the table that she had "ground the table into Jasmine's liver which caused the 'obliteration'"" that the doctor had described.Bortle may spend as much as 45 years behind bars if found guilty on both counts.
