A 31-year-old Colorado man will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after fatally shooting his sister and her boyfriend inside their house last year in an unprovoked attack captured on video by one of the victims. Authorities stated on Monday that Douglas County District Judge Patricia Herron sentenced Casey Devol to 97 years in a state penitentiary facility for the slayings of Jessica Mitchell, 32, and her boyfriend, Bryan Gray 34.

Devol pleaded guilty this month to two counts of second-degree murder and one count of criminal animal cruelty for hammering the couple's dog to death. Following the sentence hearing, authorities emphasized the importance of Mitchell's audio recording of the attack in bringing her brother to justice. "When no eyewitnesses to these murders existed, a digital recorder device became a voice for the victims," said District Attorney John Kellner.

"When no eyewitnesses to these murders existed, a digital recorder device became a voice for the victims," said District Attorney John Kellner. "Jessica likely sensed something was wrong, and her instincts to start a recording and archive the tragic turn of events helped detectives and my prosecutors piece this mystery together and bring justice to their families."First responders arrived on the site and promptly identified the two victims as Mitchell and Gray.

Following autopsy on the deaths, it was found that the method of death was homicide and the cause of death was deadly gunshot wounds in both cases.DCSO detectives discovered surveillance cameras on the property throughout the inquiry. They were able to see a suspect with numerous firearms entering the garage where the victims were discovered after studying the tape.

One of Mitchell's acquaintances called detectives shortly after the murders and gave information indicating that Mitchell's brother, Devol, was a potential suspect in her murder. Devol's driver's license photo matched the features of the suspect shown on surveillance video entering the victims' garage prior to the murders.

Investigators discovered a critical piece of evidence that helped led them to Devol during the autopsy: Mitchell had a digital recording device on her that caught a lengthy audio recording of the events leading up to and including the murders. The day after the deaths were discovered, he was apprehended at a hotel in Kansas.

"While we may never know why Jessica decided to start a recording, it was instrumental in helping us place the defendant at the home with the two victims," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Andrew Steers in a statement issued after the sentencing. "Three people are talking over dinner on the recording." The recording does not reveal what motivated the shooting.

What is apparent is that two of the three people having supper that night were murdered, and Mr. Devol is the only person who can explain why." Mitchell began recording while the three were eating supper and never turned the device off, according to the Denver Gazette. A family member who heard the recording testified in court, saying she heard Devol "staging and taunting the bodies" before "beating their dog with a hammer." Prior to the incident, she described their chat as "jovial."
