Sean Bagley, their father, discovered his wife on a rock and tried to revive her, but it was too late.He then extricated his older son from the rocks and awaited the arrival of the rescue teams. The injured 18-year-old was transferred to a hospital.According to WBZ, the family of six had traveled from Massachusetts with a buddy to enjoy a stroll and swim at the falls in the White Mountain National Forest.

A statement from the Everett Police Department read, "The Everett Police Department is heartbroken to inform the tragic demise of Melissa Bagley, 44, wife of Lt. Sean Bagley, who died during a family outing along the river in the White Mountain area yesterday afternoon. Melissa perished while attempting to rescue one of her kids who had fallen into the river.According to state police, Melissa Bagley traveled from Lynn, Massachusetts, with her family of six and a family friend to walk at Franconia Falls in New Hampshire.

While confirming that neither alcohol nor drugs were used in the incident, the New Hampshire State Police said they are still looking into it.Additionally, they stated that Melissa Bagley will undergo an autopsy. The family has expressed gratitude to individuals who contacted out and begged for privacy.

"While we appreciate all of the support, we ask that Lt. Bagley and his family be given the time and space to grieve the loss of Melissa," the statement reads. "RIP beautiful mama.... Thoughts and prayers to the family." Another wrote, "So heartbreaking. It's really tragic, this. Among several other agencies that sent their sympathies, the Cambridge police department stated, "Our hearts are with the Bagley and Everett PD families during this very difficult time."
