Over the weekend, a woman in Arizona tried to avoid law enforcement by putting her dog between them, according to the police.Records from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office show that Mary Clifton, 39, is charged with a variety of offenses, including two counts of failure to appear and one involving transportation.

The jail documents include two other charges against her, although they are not specifically listed. According to the Phoenix Police Department, she is also accused of resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer.The underlying event happened late on Saturday at the intersection of Colter Street and 107th Avenue, not far from the Camelback Ranch.

Patrol officers passing by spotted a pickup truck there stopping traffic in the middle of the road, according to a statement from the PPD sent to Law&Crime by Public Affairs Bureau Sergeant Phil Krynsky. After the defendant allegedly left after the police moved in, a car chase ensued.

The PPD said that the police "used their lights and sirens to alert the driver and make a traffic stop." Once on a residential property, the pickup ultimately drove off and slammed into a fence.The duration of the pursuit and the pickup truck's speed during it were not disclosed by law enforcement.

When police arrived at the scene of the collision, they believed Clifton, the driver, to be "the sole occupant of the pickup," which led them to attempt to detain her, according to the police statement.

According to the PPD statement, the woman then produced a sizable pit bull dog, which proceeded to attack the cops. "The dog bit the officers as they were taking the woman into custody."The dog was hit by a "less than lethal tool," according to the police, and "later ran away."

Apparently, the probe is still ongoing. Law&Crime contacted the PPD to inquire further about the whereabouts of the dog and the condition of the injured cops, but at the time of publication there had been no answer.
