Melissa Petez Cause of Death

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus stated during a news conference on Friday that the use of force was "unreasonable" and went against departmental guidelines. Because it is a "active investigation," the chief stated that he would not take any questions following the press conference. The police chief stated, "It appears that Ms. Perez was going through a mental health crisis."

When the first responding officers attempted to assist Perez and lead her to a patrol vehicle, she retreated and closed the door, worsening the situation. She hurled a glass candle at one of the cops when they attempted to speak to her through an open window, according to the police chief.

Perez held a hammer and swung it towards the house towards where the officers were standing as two officers were observed leaping over the patio area. One of the windows was ultimately broken by the hammer, but neither officer appeared to have been struck by it. Pérez did not appear to have been injured by the round of bullets that one of the officers fired in response.

She then attempted to reenter the area where the officers were, hammer in hand, at which point the officers once more opened fire, striking her fatally. Before paramedics came, officers administered first aid to Perez following the altercation. Soon after, she was declared dead by medical professionals. The three cops were detained and placed on unpaid leave pending the investigation's conclusion.

Alejandro has worked for the department for five years, Sergeant Flores has been a member of the police force for fourteen years, and Villalobos has been a member for two years. The police chief declared: "The actions of the firing officers were not consistent with SAPD policy and training." "They placed themselves in a position where they used deadly force, which was unreasonable in all the circumstances," McManus continued.
